Better World Books has Better Customer Service
Ever find somewhere that just gives you awesome customer service and you want to share it?
Better World Books is a site that not only sells new and used books, they also donate a book to someone in need every time you buy a book from them. They love books and they are environmentally friendly as well.
Back in January Better World Books had a great deal on books they listed in their "Bargain Bin." Since they were deeply discounted and since I love books, I decided buying some books would be a great way to get cheap Valentine's gifts for my children. (I know, I'm the weird mom who doesn't give my kids candy for Valentine's. They get enough of that at school. I give them books.)
Pretty much the rest of America must of have the same idea as me because the site was as slow as molasses and when I got to the checkout page, it died on me. Undeterred, I picked out all the books...again...and made it through the checkout process this time.
When you choose a used book on Better World Books, they give it a rating based on its condition, i.e. very good, good, acceptable, etc. Each rating has a description on the website.
When the books arrived, I was disappointed. Two of the books were more worn than I thought they would be. I want to make it clear that I did know they were used and I did realize that they wouldn't be in new condition. I just thought their condition didn't match the condition I had chosen online.
So the next week when a survey from Better World Books appeared in my inbox, I was quick to fill it out. I told them of my disappointment, but I didn't really think the survey would be read and responded to. Thankfully, I was wrong. Someone from the Better World Books customer care department contacted me and told me how terribly sorry they were to hear of my disappointment. They asked for the specific titles that I felt weren't up to par. After emailing those back, the site refunded me the cost of those books (asking me either to keep the books or pass them on to someone in need) and they gave me a $10 gift credit to use to purchase more books at the site. They asked that I give them a chance to redeem themselves.
I was blown away. Not only did they follow up with a survey, even though thousands of people were using their site that night, but they read my responses and contacted me to fix the issues. Yes, I did have issues with the quality of their books on my first order, but with customer service like that, I will be glad to give Better World Books a try again.

Shopping Online and Saving Money
Let’s face it – we all have way too much to do and not enough hours to do it. We need to do more with less – less time and less money. There are plenty of ways, however, to save both time and money by shopping online and looking for deals.
First, remember to look for coupon codes. There are plenty of sites that share codes as well as how well they worked and the amount of money saved. By simply searching for a store name and “coupon code,” you should be able to find several different codes that will offer a variety of deals and promotions. Many sites also offer free shipping if you use a coupon code or meet a minimum order amount. Try to “gang up” purchases in order to save on shipping fees. There are many ecommerce sites that this is easy to achieve. For example, if you need a special gift for someone, go to Shutterfly to upload photos and create a customized iPhone case or take a look at their selection of photo gifts and have it delivered while ordering address labels for yourself and a customized water bottle to stay hydrated while running errands.
There are also cash back saving sites like Ebates that provide not just coupon codes for many commonly-used ecommerce sites, but you can get cash back from those same sites for shopping. Other sites like Amazon Local and Groupon offer special deals for businesses that are located in your area.
After the kids are put to bed, consider doing your food shopping online. There are often extra coupons available as well while you shop. Once your order is submitted, an employee of the store will do all the shopping, check you out and all you need to do is pick up your order. Talk about a time saver! Some food stores even offer delivery for a small fee. So if you are home with a sick child, you can still get your food shopping done and have it brought right to your door.
Saving money is all about getting creative today. Thanks to the Internet, there are plenty of ways to get creative and find those extra deals.

Saving for Christmas: Swagbucks
Christmas should be a blessing, not a debt nightmare. In this series, I will show you how to earn extra money all year long to help you save for Christmas.
Christmas is now only 11 short months away. You've made your Christmas budget and started setting aside money for Christmas. But maybe you don't feel like the amount you can save up from your paycheck is enough. Or maybe, you just want to earn some money from other places to use towards Christmas. Where do you start?
I'm glad you asked.
There are several ways that Tim and I earn extra money to put towards our Christmas budget. In fact, this year we earned about $500 in FREE Amazon gift card money that we used to pay for Christmas gifts.
How did we do it?
Using reward sites. A reward site is basically a website that rewards you for interacting with companies or brands. This could be in the form of watching advertising, ordering through their website or giving your opinion on their brand through surveys. Most reward sites have multiple ways to earn rewards. Rewards can be given as gift cards to websites or brick and mortar stores, they could be a check in the mail or cash in a paypal account. The reward site could only give you one option of how to receive your rewards or they could give you many options. It all depends on the site.
Our favorite reward site and, in my opinion, the easiest to use is Swagbucks. By far, the majority of the free money we earned was from Swagbucks.
So how does Swagbucks work?
When you visit the site, you earn "points" called "swagbucks" by doing different ad-related things. For instance, if you watch 10 videos on the website, with an ad at the beginning of each, you earn 3 swagbucks. If you answer a daily poll question, you earn 1 swagbuck. Participating in a survey can earn you 100-250 swagbucks.
What is a swagbuck and how do I earn money with them?
A swagbuck is approximately equal to a penny. You can earn a $5 Amazon gift card for 450 swagbucks. A $10 Target card is 1000 swagbucks. Tim and I tend to stick with Amazon gift cards but there are many more you could choose from: Target, Walmart, CVS, Paypal, Starbucks, itunes, etc. Each store also offers a variety of gift card denominations: $5, $10, $15, etc. As you can see, the reward options are many.
Starting out at any reward site is intimidating. It's hard to know how to earn rewards and what all the "rules" are. I'm here to help you.
What is the best way to earn Swagbucks?
If you decide to start using Swagbucks, keep in mind the time you want to put into this. Remember, a SB is basically a penny. A survey might earn you 100 SB, but if it takes you an hour to do, it might not be worth it. Is your time worth more than $1 an hour? If you are doing the survey while you are watching TV at night, it might not matter that it takes an hour. If you are doing it during the workday instead of doing work, than it probably matters.

- Going through the NOSO (no obligation, special offers) and clicking on the "No Thanks" for each offer will earn you 2 swagbucks a day.
- You can earn 50 a day using the Swagbucks app for your smartphone. For that, you watch videos with an ad in front of each. Every 5 videos is worth 2 swagbucks.
- Swagbucks TV through their website can earn you up to 150 SB a day (however, you would have to be on your computer the entire day to earn that many, 30 - 50 a day is a much more doable amount).
- Surveys are also a great way to earn swagbucks. One caveat of surveys are that you must qualify to take the survey before you can earn SB. I don't qualify for many, but, if you are unique in some way in terms of your demographics, you may qualify for a lot.
- Many online stores offer incentives if you go through the Swagbucks site to shop. You can earn 2-8 SB per dollar spent, depending on the site.
- You can also earn Swagbucks by using their site to search the web. (This can be annoying, though, because they randomly decide to award swagbucks for searching and they randomly decide how much to give you for that search. For example, you could do 25 searches and only earn 7 swagbucks, or you could do 1 search and earn 25 swagbucks.)
- There are several other ways to earn swagbucks. They are all available under the "Earn" tab on the Swagbucks website.
If you decide to start using Swagbucks, keep in mind the time you want to put into this. Remember, a SB is basically a penny. Other Tips
- You can only request 2 gift cards a day and you can only request 5 of the exact same gift card each month. For example, you can only request 5 $5 Amazon cards a month. You can also request 5 $15 Amazon cards a month, because they are a different denomination. Depending on the time you put into it, you could earn a significant amount of money.
- The $5 Amazon card is the best value on the site. It is 450 SB to redeem. Every other reward is at least a SB per penny (i.e. $15 card is 1500 SB).
- Usually Tim and I make it our goal to earn enough SB to get our 5 $5 cards. That means you have to earn 75 SB a day.
- You can have one Swagbucks account per person. It is not limited to one per household.

Our (almost) free dinner at Chick-Fil-A
Just had to tell you about our awesome meal last Friday night. I was taking a meal to a family at church whose mom had had surgery, so, obviously I didn't want to cook for my brood as well. Instead, we all went to deliver the meal, then stopped at Chick-fil-a for dinner.
I decided before we left home that I was going to get us as free of a meal as possible. So I looked through our handy, dandy Chick-fil-a calendars that I purchased in December ($6 each) and cut out all the coupons. In case you aren't aware, you can use CFA coupons anytime during the year, not just in the time-frame it has listed on the coupon. AND, as I found out on Friday, you can also use expired coupons. I just LOVE Chick-fil-a!!!
So here are the coupons I used:
FREE 8-piece chicken nuggets (for kids to split)
FREE medium lemonade (for one kid)
FREE medium lemonade (for the other kid)
FREE large Fries (for kids to split)
(These 4 coupons fed my kids. Then they ran off to play in the large, super kid-friendly play area. Yay! Burn off energy time!)
FREE Spicy chicken sandwich (for my honey)
FREE grilled chicken salad (for me)
FREE large Fries (to split)
FREE large Coke (for him)
FREE water for me (because tap water is always free - no coupon needed)
So there you have it. I used 8 coupons, saved $18.15 and only spent $1.81 for us to eat (darn tax). And since there are still many more coupons to use from the calendar, I definitely got my $12 worth out of it. Maybe I should have bought more than two...

How I'm Going to Get a Free DSi for Christmas Part 2
If you'll remember from Part 1 of this post, I told you that I am working hard to earn Amazon gift cards. I'm going to use those to buy a DSi for my daughter for Christmas - all for FREE!!!
I told you about the survey companies I use and how I have earned $125 from them over the past 6 months.

Point Reward websites let you earn points in a variety of ways. You then trade your points for rewards, i.e. Amazon gift cards. I have used several of these sites in the past, but currently only use 2 (these websites can be time consuming, so use your own judgment about how many you join).

Swagbucks is a really fun site. Its main function is as a search engine. Periodically as you search you are awarded Swagbucks, usually 8-10 of them. When you get 450 Swagbucks, you earn a $5 Amazon card. You can redeem 5 of these a month. Incidentally, there are a lot of different gift cards you can choose as well but I've only ever done the Amazon ones.
There are so many ways to earn Swagbucks on the site, I can't even begin to tell you all of them. You can answer surveys, shop through their site (earn 2 Swagbucks per dollar spent), join services like Netflix, or watch commercials and answer questions about them. That's just to name a few. This is a fun, easy way to earn some Amazon dollars. I've made $100 through Swagbucks so far. Interested? Join here.

This is my favorite site. I just love My Points. Just as in Swagbucks, there are a variety of ways to earn points through My Points. They send you multiple emails a day. Just clicking through the emails to the site advertised gives you 5 points. Do what they ask on the site and you can earn anywhere from 25 to 2000 points. Shop through My Points and earn 2 to 8 points per dollar spent (I do all my shopping through My Points because I feel I get rewarded more through them then through Swagbucks). My Points also has a search feature that earns points. Possibly my favorite part is that My Points connects up with Coupons.com. You can print coupons from My Points and earn points both for printing and redeeming them.
My Points offers many different gift cards as rewards. Find ones for popular stores and restaurants, including - you guessed it - Amazon. So far I've earned $125 worth of gift cards - a $25 Amazon card, a $50 Amazon card, a $25 Kohls card and a $25 CVS card.
So there you have it, over the past 6 months or so, I've earned $125 from doing surveys and $225 from using rewards websites - plenty enough for a pink DSi :).

How I'm going to get a free DSi for Christmas
Ever help out Santa? My kids have each asked for a Nintendo DSi for Christmas. And since sometimes I have to help out Santa...and since DSi's are on the pricey side ($149)...I thought I'd try to get one for free. :)
So, how in the world am I going to get a free DSi? Using Amazon credit.
Ok, ok, your next question is "But how do I get Amazon credit?"
I'm so glad you asked!!
There are 2 main ways that I earn Amazon credit. 1 - Taking online surveys. 2 - Using points reward websites. I thought I'd list some of the sites I use and how much I've earned from them. (I'll tell you about the surveys this post and the reward sites in a future post.)
1. Online Surveys
Online surveys are great, if you can find the right website to go through and if you can do the surveys while you are doing something else. Every evening Tim and I like to watch TV (or Netflix). Since I'm sitting there, basically doing nothing anyway, I've started doing surveys during that time. I can probably get through, on average, 2 surveys a night. That way I feel like I am being more productive with my time.
Here are the survey companies I use and the good and bad about them:
Toluna
This is one of my favorites. You'll get about 5 or 6 survey invites a day, but will probably only qualify for 1 or 2 of them. You earn points for each survey, anywhere from 1500 points up to 90,000. I typically qualify for the 1500-3000 point surveys. The higher ones are usually for a very specific demographic - such as "caretakers for someone with diabetes". I always click through and try for the higher ones, though, just in case I qualify.
Once you earn 60,000 points, you can trade it in for a $20 check. I've just requested my second one of these and I've been using Toluna for about 6 months. ($40 in 6 months may not sound like a lot, but it was earned in time that I was already doing something else. In other words, its like not spending any additional time on something and earning money for it.)
Valued Opinions
This is one I really like too. You won't get as many survey invites from them - maybe 4 a week. Each survey is worth a certain dollar amount, from $0.50-$3.00. Once you've earned $20 in your account, you can cash it out for a $20 Amazon gift certificate. The certificate code is emailed to you immediately, so you can use it right away. The downside to this site is that your qualifying survey money takes about 4 weeks to credit to your account. So you can see that it is there "pending", but you just have to wait for it to go through.
I've claimed 2 Amazon cards from them. So, just like above, I've made $40 in about 6 months.
MyView
This is a smaller site, which is good and bad. Good because you tend to qualify for more surveys. Bad because there aren't as many surveys available to take. One thing I really like about MyView is that it gives you points even if you don't qualify for the survey. If you answer all the initial questions, you usually get 175 points. If you then qualify for the survey from those questions, you'll get anywhere from 700-1400 points. I also like the fact that your points are credited immediately.
Once you get to 21,000 points, you can cash them in for a $15 Amazon card. I've earned one of these.
My Survey
I get a couple survey offers a week from them and tend to qualify for most of them. They are worth anywhere from 150 to 700 points each. When you earn 1100 points, you get a $10 Amazon card. I've gotten 3 of these.
So overall I've earned $125 doing surveys over the last 6 months - $40 in cash and $85 in Amazon credit.
So, how in the world am I going to get a free DSi? Using Amazon credit.
Ok, ok, your next question is "But how do I get Amazon credit?"
I'm so glad you asked!!
There are 2 main ways that I earn Amazon credit. 1 - Taking online surveys. 2 - Using points reward websites. I thought I'd list some of the sites I use and how much I've earned from them. (I'll tell you about the surveys this post and the reward sites in a future post.)
1. Online Surveys
Online surveys are great, if you can find the right website to go through and if you can do the surveys while you are doing something else. Every evening Tim and I like to watch TV (or Netflix). Since I'm sitting there, basically doing nothing anyway, I've started doing surveys during that time. I can probably get through, on average, 2 surveys a night. That way I feel like I am being more productive with my time.
Here are the survey companies I use and the good and bad about them:
Toluna
This is one of my favorites. You'll get about 5 or 6 survey invites a day, but will probably only qualify for 1 or 2 of them. You earn points for each survey, anywhere from 1500 points up to 90,000. I typically qualify for the 1500-3000 point surveys. The higher ones are usually for a very specific demographic - such as "caretakers for someone with diabetes". I always click through and try for the higher ones, though, just in case I qualify.
Once you earn 60,000 points, you can trade it in for a $20 check. I've just requested my second one of these and I've been using Toluna for about 6 months. ($40 in 6 months may not sound like a lot, but it was earned in time that I was already doing something else. In other words, its like not spending any additional time on something and earning money for it.)
Valued Opinions
This is one I really like too. You won't get as many survey invites from them - maybe 4 a week. Each survey is worth a certain dollar amount, from $0.50-$3.00. Once you've earned $20 in your account, you can cash it out for a $20 Amazon gift certificate. The certificate code is emailed to you immediately, so you can use it right away. The downside to this site is that your qualifying survey money takes about 4 weeks to credit to your account. So you can see that it is there "pending", but you just have to wait for it to go through.
I've claimed 2 Amazon cards from them. So, just like above, I've made $40 in about 6 months.
MyView
This is a smaller site, which is good and bad. Good because you tend to qualify for more surveys. Bad because there aren't as many surveys available to take. One thing I really like about MyView is that it gives you points even if you don't qualify for the survey. If you answer all the initial questions, you usually get 175 points. If you then qualify for the survey from those questions, you'll get anywhere from 700-1400 points. I also like the fact that your points are credited immediately.
Once you get to 21,000 points, you can cash them in for a $15 Amazon card. I've earned one of these.
